What to do What to do...

Last night I was reading Parker the story of Moses and the 10 plagues. I told him that Moses loved God's people but the bad guys (I've got to speak his language) had control over them. I explained that Moses was called by God to help lead the good guys away from the bad guys, but the bad guys kept saying "No. You can't leave." This led to the 10 plagues, and we went through each one. He was fascinated by the pictures in his Bible of frogs and bugs everywhere. But, when I got to the 10th plague, I found myself skipping out on some of the details. I'm not entirely sure it is appropriate for a four year old to hear about how the oldest child died..especially since he is the oldest child in our family. I think the name "Angel of Death" may freak the poor kid out. Now, I don't want to leave out parts of Scripture. It is truth and it is meant to guide us and teach us. But, what do I do about the "scary" parts of it? Do I share those with my four year old? What is appropriate? What would you do?

This one is easy. Tell him that the oldest child was condemned to be a White Sox fan for the rest of their life. You avoid the mention of death AND...wait for it...condemn them to a fate WORSE than death. Man do I have this parenting logic licked or what? jk

I think it's ok to leave the scary parts out for now and wait until they're older to explain those parts to them. They won't remember that you left it out later on and they're not going to fully understand it now anyway...so I think it's perfectly fine to leave it out for now. No sense it making them think things in the Bible are scary!!

I agree with Angel. I think leaving out some of the more specific details is ok at this age. As they get older and can understand things more, then more details can be explained. But I am sure he had plenty of questions for you!!
