I am a supporter of people coming to this nation in order to better their existence. I am by-product of an immigrant. I am proud of my grandfather's accomplishments and in his ability to adjust and assimilate into the nation he chose to move to.
My grandfather came to this country when he was 16 years old from a poor farm town in Italy. He labored to form a home and fortune for his immediate family, and then laid a foundation for his children and their children to build upon. He started at the bottom, and has worked his way to the top. My grandfather's native tongue is Italian. My grandfather learned the language of this country, and did not forsake his heritage in doing so. When he does business, he speaks English. When he is at home, he speaks Italian. When he is in the community he speaks English. When he doesn't want us to know something, he speaks Italian. My grandfather never expected America to change for him. In fact, one of Gaspare's signature lines is, "Nice Country!". He repeats this mantra whenever he sees a family member taking advantage of one of America's finest opportunities (the work force, the education fields, the extra cirricular activities). This country gave my family a future. It is a great country.

I have to disagree with you on one point...I really do feel that our children should learn other languages. (My older daughter went to a french school from pre-school - 1 grade and was fluent) Because we are a global society, knowing another language can help our children in the work force and in other areas. Even in spreading the gospel. Do you know how much it costs to send a missionary to language school? Just a thought.
Very good point.
