I have been hearing a particular term lately as I watch Guy Fieri on "Diners, Drive-in's and Dives". He constantly refers to a certain type of meal as "comfort food". This label usually describes a meatloaf, mashed potatoes (or other veggie), and a homemade pie.
However, for me, the term "comfort food" evokes a different picture. My mind conjures up a plate of my grandmother's homemade ravioli, topped with her special "gravy" (marinara sauce), and complimented with an oil and vinegar salad. When I smell fontina cheese, sample a piece of hard salami, or taste a bitter olive, I am taken back to a time in life, where things were much simpler. Almost every Sunday (until we moved to the suburbs), we'd gather at Grandma Bea's and enjoy a traditional Italian meal. That is why these foods bring me instant comfort, and certainly take me on a trip down memory lane. Some of the fondest times with my family have been around the Mangialardi table, and some of the most foundational times have been paired with a good pasta dinner.
The scent of garlic and onions simmering in a light olive oil, signals me to relax and enjoy life, and it reminds me to appreciate one of God's greatest gifts to me...my family.
What foods do this for you?

My mom's homemade chicken potpie. It's literally to-die-for and she makes it for my birthday every year!
I also really like sweets/chocolate! Yummy!
My Grandma's potatoe pancakes. She used to make MOUNDS of them. Since she passed away a couple of years ago, I have made it one of my life's mission to recreate them as she never had a recipe.
OHHH! And Sauerbraten. Mmmmmm!
Yummy german goodness.
Mine totally is the same as yours..surprised?
I would say Roast or Fried Chicken with mashed potatoes and gravy, bisquits, corn - that was a favorite after church on Sundays and always brings back warm memories for me!
DITTO ON WHAT ANGEL SAID! I love fried chicken with mashed potaotes and lots of gravy. My corn HAD to be mixed with my potatoes.
But when I think of COMFORT FOOD...I think Ice-Cream.
For me, comfort food would be anything my Grandma Betty used to make. She has passed away but she was an incredible cook and made the best pies and homemade rolls. (I love that show with Guy....he is fun to watch.)
I miss those good old days at Grandma's. My biggest fear is that our generation will grow apart and wont keep those traditions that made us who we are today. I feel like we already are distant which breaks my heart! I want those simpler times you speak of to return but now all we are left with are amazing memories of great food and hilarious company.
My grandma's homemade bread or cherry pie and my mom's homemade noodles in chicken noodle soup and her homemade pizza too... yum, I'm getting hungry just thinking about it.
